Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
